When Adults Percolate

Now that you’re a bona fide adult, if you could have a toy from when you were a kid again, what toy would it be?

For me, it was a battery powered coffee maker that came with four cups and four spoons.

I was around nine years old, when I became interested in drinking coffee, and I would ask my dad for it.

He would reply, ” Do you want to be dumb like me? ”

Or sometimes it was, ” Do you want to be dark like me? ”

I thought those were clever responses then, and now that I’m a bona fide adult, I love them even more.

So, it was in Lathrop, California when little Missy’s dad would serve her coffee when she asked for it.

Of course, as a kid I had to have it with cream and sugar.

When I was 10 years old, my family moved back to Tucson, Arizona from California.

We were staying at my grandparents’ house until our own was ready.

It was around Christmas time and the way I remember it is, Uncle Abel asked me what I wanted for Christmas.

I told him that I wanted a coffee maker for kids.

A family with three kids lived across the street from my grandparents’ house. Two boys and a girl.

I think it was on their television (we didn’t own one) that I saw a commercial for this coffee maker.

The thought of having my very own coffee maker was blue heaven.

Uncle Abel came through with my coffee maker, and it was there at my grandparents’ house when after dinner, I would take my coffee maker set outside and make coffee for any kid willing.

And so it goes, for some years, I have randomly searched for this coffee maker when the kid in me yearned for that other time and other place.

But it was always in vain.

Until last week.

It was very late last Saturday, when I decided to frolic through ebay. I enter, kids’ coffee maker 1980s.

Several were shown and I was surprised that that many versions were available.

But I knew that I would recognize the one I had because my heart would tell me.

Truthfully, I didn’t believe I would come across mine until my heart skipped.

There it was!

I zoomed in on it in every way possible, stunned that a favorite toy I enjoyed playing with as a kid, could be mine again.

What’s more, the description said it was new, the box unopened.

So, big Missy bought it.

It was for $29.99 with the order total being $37.40 after taxes and shipping. I did receive a six dollar discount but I don’t know why.

Worth every penny…

My battery powered electric coffee maker, complete with four cups and four spoons for ages 5 and up, arrived today!

I held the box in my hands and looked back at the memories behind the clear plastic cover.

I’m thinking about putting it on my coffee bar with my adult coffee maker.

Yes, it will get played with.

Now, about that baby rash doll…
